Fast connection in 3 thousand districts and for 7,2 million citizens in the “white areas” of the following Regions: Abruzzo, Molise, Emilia Romagna, Lombardia, Toscana e Veneto

Infratel Italia and Open Fiber signed last Friday (16th june 2017) in Rome a concession contract for the realization of a ultrafast broadband network in the market failure areas of the Regions included in the first tender (Abruzzo, Molise, Lombardia, Emilia Romagna, Toscana e Veneto).

The contract has been signed by Tommaso Pompei, CEO Open Fiber, and Domenico Tudini, CEO Infratel Italia to the presence of the Minister for Territorial Cohesion and the South, Claudio De Vincenti, the Undersecretary of State for the economic development Antonello Giacomelli, the President of Infratel Italia, Maurizio Dècina, the CEO of Invitalia, Domenico Arcuri, and the President of Open Fiber, Franco Bassanini.

“The sign of this contract,  we move forward to the next step of the strategy of the ultrabroadband Plan. And the first construction site for the public network in the white areas will be operative very soon, before the summer” – declared the  Minister for Territorial Cohesion and the South, , Claudio De Vincenti.

For the Undersecretary of State for the economic development Antonello Giacomelli “differently to the past when the Public investments were non-repayable, now  with the resources of the Government and the Regions we are building a Public network that will reach more than 4 million of buildings through the optic fiber. The prices are going to be much lower than the currents, so the private operators will be more competitive offering better services to the citizens and to the enterprises”.

“The results of the tender has been higher than the expectations, in technical and economic, terms as well. The situation is characterized by lower costs and a widespread availability of the fiber on all the territory” said the CEO of Infratel, Domenico Tudini.

In the opinion of the CEO of Open Fiber,Tommaso Pompei: “We are ready to realize a strategic infrastructure to promote the economic growth and the digitalization of the Country. According to the deadlines of the contract, Open Fiber will provide a fiber optic communication network to the houses of 7 million of Italian citizens and more than 500.000 enterprises and public administration locations”.

3.000 districts are going to be involved in this operation, with almost 4,6 million buildings to cover and 7 million citizens interested.

The Open Fiber proposal is to cover with technology FTTH 4,2 milion of buildings.

The contract signed on Friday is the first of three tenders connected to the “White Areas Plan” valued 3 billion of euro, which follows the direct model provided by the State aid Regime SA 41647 (N/2016), approved by the European Commission on 30th june 2016 that involves over than 7.700 districts and has got the goal to cover 9,9 millions of buildings and 14,7 millions of inhabitants. The second tender for other 11 Regions is in phase of adjudication, the third for the lasts 3 Regions (Puglia, Sardegna e Calabria) is expected for the next months.
